Ceramic Tiles - Planning Your Ceramic Bathroom Tiles Layout

Deciding and understanding where to start when tiling is an important factor in getting the job right. This applies whether you are tiling a whole wall or even just a small area like a splashback. In this article I am going to provide you with a quick guide to doing this properly.

As tiled areas consist of regular shaped units i.e. the tiles, it is always best to centre your tile pattern using whole tiles and then cut tiles are used to finish at the ends.

 

Tiling around Your Bath Tub

Bath tubs are normally located either in a corner or an alcove of the bathroom. Assuming the bath fits exactly within an alcove, you will need to ensure your tiling finishes level with the front edge of the tub at both ends. If in a corner the tiling at both ends should finish flush with the bath.

You begin each row at the outer edge of the bath or alcove, using a whole tile i.e. one that is uncut. When tiling the back wall be sure to centre your ceramic tiles. Once all the whole tiles are fitted you can then complete each row by cutting tiles as required (these are normally needed for both corners).

 

Applying Tiles around Your Splash back

Splash backs are such a good idea as they protect the wall next to your sink from water splashes (as the name suggests). Normally a ceramic tile splash back consists of a couple or even three rows of tiles.

Start by measuring the centre of your hand basin or sink and draw a vertical line on the wall at this point. Next you place a whole tile either side of this line and work outwards. It is usual practice to finish your tiles just wider than your sink for maximum protection.
